The formula is a floor, not a ceiling. Several factors push actual hours higher:
- Discussion-heavy courses. An initial post plus two substantive replies can consume three to five hours weekly on its own.
- Quantitative subjects. Statistics, calculus and chemistry routinely run well above formula because problem sets take as long as they take.
- Lab components. Virtual labs and lab reports add hours not counted in lecture credits.
- Weak prerequisites. If the assumed background is missing, you are learning two courses at once.
- Group projects. Coordination across time zones adds overhead unrelated to the material.
Conversely, subjects you already know professionally can run below formula. A working accountant will move faster through introductory accounting than the formula predicts.
Building a Schedule That Holds
Work backwards from the hours you actually have, not the courses you want to take.
- Total your committed hours: work, commute, caregiving, sleep, everything fixed
- Subtract from 168 to find what genuinely remains
- Reserve at least ten hours for rest and unplanned events

If You Are Already Overloaded
Recognising overload in week three is far more useful than recognising it in week ten. The signals are consistent: consistently submitting at the deadline rather than before, skipping optional material, and a growing sense of dread about opening the LMS.
